Last time, when choosing facial cream, I read loads of small text on the back of the boxes....
Besides the harmful ingredients like parabens and phthalates, in the ingredients of creams are hidden the true beneficial substances, not just the phrases we read on adds and advertisements such as "skin that breathes" or "rejuvenating care."
Here is a short list of the ingredients and their effects.
Alpha-hydroxy acids, abbreviated as AHA. Derived from grapes, apples, olives and milk. Help exfoliating dead skin cells and reveal new skin underneath. It is considered a great tool against first wrinkles.
It is important to know that AHA products are used at night, the prolonged use can make skin sensitive and irritated.
Antioxidants -This is actually vitamins - A, C and E, that fight the free radicals in the skin in the same way as they defeated throughout the body via food.
The biggest catalysts for the formation of free radicals (let say , "poison", so you get it) are smoking, sun and pollution.
Beta-hydroxy acids (BHA). Directly linked with AHA and work in similar ways - accelerating the renewal of skin cells. The most popular beta-hydroxy acid is salicylic.
Use caution if you have sensitive or dry skin. Salicylic acid is most often used in cosmetics for teenagers because it helps to regulate oil secretion.
In more mature skin, however, the effect can be reversed.
Ceramides. These are the type of lipids (fats) found in the intercellular spaces. They help to retain moisture in the skin.
That is why ceramides are most commonly used in creams for women over 30 years, with dry or damaged skin. They are not necessary for younger skin.
Collagen / Elastin - elements that keep skin supple and soft. As we age, collagen production decreases, causing sagging and wrinkles.
Panthenol - Skin converts this substance in vitamin B5, a soothing and moisturizing.
